Presentation in New York City (At UniGroup)

For those of you who live in the New York City area, I'll be making a presentation on webserver performance at the monthly Unigroup meeting on May 22, 2008.  I'll be covering why mod_php sucks for performance, as well as alternative web servers to Apache (namely Lighttpd and NginX).  You can find more information at the Unigroup website.  I'm going to post a synopsis of the presentation here afterwards (in article format), so if you can't make it, that'll be available.

New Feature - Live Support!

Check it out!  Under tools is a brand new feature, IRC Chat!  Thanks to Mibbit, we can now provide an IRC gateway to Freenode, and the #joomla, #joomla-dev, and #joomla-performance chat rooms!  Now you can utilize the live support of IRC without needing a seperate client!

Note, like all IRC clients, Mibbit does keep track of your IP address and host name (To reduce SPAM on the irc networks).  So it's not anonymous (Basically, just don't abuse the system).

The Smallest Webserver

Via has recently come out with ultra-tiny form factor motherboard.  I managed to get a hold of one of these, and have built the smallest (and most energy efficient) webserver running Joomla 1.5.1.  (It's not the smallest webserver...  There's one that's a single IC).  The whole thing, powersupply and all, is smaller than a 3.5" hard drive (infact, I use an old IDE drive caddy to hold it).  Peak power draw is a mere 15 watts.  I'm preparing a complete writeup on this thing, but I thought I'd throw a little teaser at you...

SEO, a mis-guided cause?
I've been looking around a lot lately at sites and extensions for Joomla (and even white papers), and a lot of it is focused around SEO.  Search engine optimization.  Now, I'm not saying that SEO is bad... Infact I do think it is important.  But, is it as important as people make it out to be?  I personally think it should be a secondary concern.  There is another optimization that is BADLY needed for a very large number of sites.
