Can anyone recommend an extension or plugin to enable playing .flv videos on a Joomla site, that doesn't take up as many resources as AllVideoPlugin?

This is nice component you have Anthony.

If you compare this to the JRE one ( http://www.joomlatwork.com/products/components/joomla_mambo_cache_booster.html )

whats the difference about them and how do this affect the peformance ? I am mainly thinking of the J 1.5.2 version.

Well, there's a few things to point out here. I will NOT buy an extension to benchmark it. Sorry, I just won't...

The reason I have not created a PageCache for 1.5, is because 1.5 has it's own built in Page Cache (it's the cache plugin). There's little to be gained (or a lot to be lost I should say) by doing anything besides what's available in the core.

Now, one quote bothers me on that page, If a page is within the cache and is valid no SQL queries or an SQL connection is made. Since the sessions are stored in the database, how can this component effectively determine if a user is logged in or not (without causing a whole bunch of confusion)?

Hi

I just joined this forum, I saw the link in ircmaxell's sig in the Joomla! forums moments ago and decided to pop in . The article being discussed in this thread immediately piqued my interest. What a super list of recommendations it contains. I have briefly browsed through the other content and Overall, the site is terrific. I just wish that I had discovered it sooner .

Top stuff!

Cheers

Hi ircmaxell,

This quote Take a look at what mambots you are running. If you are not using any of them, then get rid of them (don't just disable them, uninstall them). Every time you load a page, mambots are called as much as 20 to 30 times. If the code isn't 100% efficient and needed, it's a waste of power.
was taken from the subject article. Can you please elaborate on this? It gives the impression that there is some performance overhead even from disabled mambots (plugins). Is this the case?

Cheers

Interesting question.

So this mean that you can take away all the legacy plugin folder right away Anthony? and if you cant take away all which one?

I'm also interested in what was meant by this quote:
If you are not using any of them, then get rid of them (don't just disable them, uninstall them).

I thought disabling was sufficient.

I know I could google for this, but, I'd like the author to post a recommended skeleton script for backing up Joomla.

Most of my backups for Joomla, to date, are centered around doing a MySQL dump via phpMyAdmin, and making sure I've FTP'd down a copy of whatever's on the server.

I'm about 35% LAMP developer and 65% Microsoft.NET - so - I don't spend enough time in linux/unix land to be adpet at writing such a script - but I do see where my web hosting provider will let me schedule the execution of such script as a CRON job.

Thanks for this great site.

About backup for Joomla 1.5 I can recommend Joompack. Search the JED you will find a super good backup solution.

Thanks for the tip. I was able to locate and download "JoomlaPack" and am *extremely* impressed with this component. The documentation explains how easy it is to create a CRON job, too. WOW.
