Benchmarking Joomla 1.5.1 2008/02/07 16:37 Karma: 0
This thread discusses the Content article: Benchmarking Joomla 1.5.1

wow that is interesting; its actually good to see how 1.5 is actually a big improvement over 1.14 but the later results are intriguing to say the least.

im still waiting on components and modules to catch up with 1.5 so hopefully when they are ready to rear, the joomla team as good as they are will have ironed this out

Performance wise, it looks like a wash between 1.0.x and 1.5.x.

1.5.x is all objects, and logically benefits the most from an opcode/object cache - however it also comes with more overhead, so you're basically 'catching up' to 1.0.x-like performance with all the additional optimizations.

1.5 will eventually outperform 1.0 with aggressive caching, as 1.5 is modular enough in design under the hood to allow hooks for really getting creative. 1.0 isn't so flexible in this regard, and as a result doesn't have as much to gain.

If I am reading the results correctly, it looks like Joomla 1.0 performs much better than 1.5 for Test 1-3 because it is able to process more requests per second. It does look like Joomla 1.5.1 caches up (pun intended) in Test 6. This doesn't factor in the Pagecache component. I'd imagine that Joomla 1.0 with Pagecache would be processing many more requests. Also wondering how 1.5.1 core cache compares with pagecache.

I'd be curious to see the benchmark repeated for Joomla-1.5.1 with the legacy plugin enabled and the result compared again. A blog post on the Joomla developers blog indicated this was a 10/15% performance hit?

Well, I'm in the process of doing another round of benchmarks, so I won't be able to do this until they are done, but I'll put it on my list!

Hi

What does the axis with the numbers 0-60 show? Time or calculations?

Unless it's time the graf realy does not show anything, as we do not compare the total amount of calculations pr. version that needs to be calculated with time.

Cheers, Kampp

That's requests per second. It's a measurement of the approximate load the software can withstand. The details are in the article...

Ok... so my assumption is perhaps wrong - the graf does not show how fast a page is shown, but the amount of requests pr. second (not knowing how many requests are needed for each version of Joomla to show a page)?

Will a graf showing the "time to show a page" be created at some point?
